Senator Leila de Lima on Tuesday appealed to authorities to spare her former driver, Ronnie Dayan, from the Duterte administration’s allegations that she benefited from the illegal drug trade inside the national penitentiary.
“Sa pagkakaaresto kay Ronnie Dayan, umaasa ako sa tamang pagtrato sa kanya ng mga kinauukulan. Ganoon na rin ang panawagan ko sa Pangulo para sa iba pang mga tetestigo laban sa akin katulad ni Kerwin Espinosa,” De Lima said in a statement, referring to the alleged bigtime drug lord now in police custody.
“Ako naman talaga ang habol ninyo. Huwag na ninyo silang pahirapan pa, mga kriminal man sila o hindi,” she added.
Dayan was arrested in San Juan, La Union shortly before noon Tuesday, ending more than a month of manhunt operations after an arrest order was issued by the House of Representatives.
De Lima had previously admitted having romantic affairs with Dayan, which she said lasted for a “few years.”
De Lima said her accusers should just file cases against her before the court.
“Huwag na rin sana ninyong gawing drama pa ang paninira sa akin. Isampa na lamang ninyo ang mga kaso sa husgado at doon ko na kayo haharapin,” she said.
De Lima said she is ready to face any court of law to prove that the allegations against her are not true.
She reiterated that she did not receive a single centavo from illegal drug operations.
“Sa tanang buhay ko, lalong-lalo na sa paglilingkod sa gobyerno, hindi ako nakinabang sa anumang katiwalian, dahil hindi ko po kailanman kayang talikuran ang tiwala ng sambayanan,” De Lima, former Justice secretary, said.
De Lima said she hopes that the truth will eventually come out.
“Sa ating sambayanang Pilipino, nawa’y patuloy po tayong magbantay at maging mapanuri sa mga nangyayari sa ating lipunan. Umaasa akong sa huli ay lalabas din ang buong katotohanan,” she said.
