Anti-Marcos groups converge at historic EDSA monument

MANILA - Various groups opposing the burial of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos are expected to converge Friday at the historic People Power Monument along EDSA.<br /><br />
Various prominent anti-Marcos personalities have started to arrive at the monument to show indignation to the "surprise" Marcos burial.<br /><br />
"They are revising history...Bastusan na ito," said artist Jim Paredes. "Kung tunay na Pilipino ka malulungkot ka."<br /><br />

Susan Tagle, a co-convenor of the Coalition Against Marcos Burial, said groups will converge at the monument Friday, apart from the various pocket protests around the country.<br /><br />
"I was surprised at the speed. I was no longer surprised they would do it," Tagle said.<br /><br />

The late dictator was buried hurriedly at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes Cemetery) on Friday, as the family embarked on a political revival while thousands who suffered under his two-decade-long rule still cry for justice.<br /><br />
The Supreme Court last week rejected a petition by human rights victims to stop the transfer of Marcos' remains to the same resting place of former presidents, national artists and heroes of war.<br /><br />
President Rodrigo Duterte, an ally of the Marcoses, allowed the burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, which was the late strongman's last wish, according to his family.<br /><br />
Marcos' remains were transferred by helicopter from Ilocos Norte province, where it had been kept since it was brought back to the country in 1993. He died while on exile in Hawaii in 1989, three years after he was ousted by a military-backed popular revolt.<br /><br />
The country marked 30th anniversary of Marcos' ouster this year, with 75,000 victims still awaiting reparation.<br /><br /> 
The Marcoses allegedly plundered $10 billion from state coffers during their reign and only $4 billion in cash and assets have been recovered by an anti-graft body formed by his successor, the late president Corazon Aquino.<br /><br />
The late dictator's only son and namesake, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., narrowly lost the vice-presidential race this year to Leni Robredo, an ally of the family's political nemesis and Duterte's immediate predecessor, Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III.<br /><br />
His widow, former first lady Imelda Marcos is a congresswoman in Ilocos Norte while his eldest daughter, Imee, is the provincial governor.

MANILA - The Catholic Church in the Philippines may have been a key factor in the ousting of former President Ferdinand Marcos, but after his surprise interment at the Libingan ng mga Bayani on Friday, at least one of its leaders has called for prayers and respect for the late dictator. <br /><br />
In an interview with the Church-run Radio Veritas, Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles said that while he understands the plight of the victims of the Marcos regime, he reminded Catholics that dwelling on hate is not being godly. <br /><br />
"Kung tayo ay maka-Diyos, kahit na iyan ay diktador, basta patay na iyan, 'pagdasal natin ang kaluluwa niya. Ang katawan niya igalang natin," the prelate said.<br /><br /> 
(If we are godly, even though he was a dictator, since he is already dead, we should pray for his soul. We should respect his remains.) <br /><br />
He also insisted that the spirit of the EDSA Revolution will not fade despite Marcos' burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. <br /><br />
"Nagkasala siya. Hindi natin sasabihin na mabuti ang ginawa niya pero huwag naman natin siyang kamuhian ngayong patay na siya," Arguelles added. <br /><br />
(He was a sinner. We are not saying that what he did was good, but we should not abhor him.)<br /><br />
Instead of dwelling on hate, the archbishop called on the Filipino people to learn from the lessons of Martial Law, value freedom, and uphold democracy in the country. <br /><br />
"Paano, napakasama ng ginagawa natin sa kalayaan na ipinaglaban natin. 'Yun ang mahirap. Sa akin, we get what we deserve. Because we don't try our best na talagang i-value 'yung freedom na ipinaglaban natin," the prelate said. <br /><br />
(How did the freedom we fought for come to this? That's the hardest part. For me, we get what we deserve, because we didn't try our best to really value the freedom we fought for.)<br /><br />
'DISHONORABLE, DESECRATION'<br /><br />
But for Bishop Broderick Pabillo, auxiliary of the Manila archdiocese, Marcos' interment at the Libingan ng mga Bayani was a disgrace and very characteristic of the dictator's rule. <br /><br />
"This burial is dishonorable because they hide it from the people for fear of the people. It is characteristic of the Marcos rule–secretive," Pabillo said in a report from the CBCP News. <br /><br />
For Fr. Jerome Secillano, an officer of a CBCP committee, said Marcos will always be remembered as a "dictator, plunderer, and a human rights violator."<br /><br />
"With his burial, the Marcoses have desecrated the meaning of honor, nobility and heroism that are otherwise associated with the hallowed ground,” he added.<br /><br />
Before the surprise burial, CBCP President and Lingayen Archbishop Socrates Villegas had issued a statement slamming the Supreme Court's decision to allow Marcos' burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani. <br /><br />
Villegas served as secretary for the late Jaime Cardinal Sin, the late archbishop of Manila who was one of the first to rally Filipinos, by delivering a message over Radio Varitas, to go to EDSA in February 1986 for a people power revolt against the Marcos dictatorship.

The Supreme Court (SC) on November 8 rejected a petition by human rights victims to stop the transfer of Marcos' remains to the same resting place of former presidents, national artists, and heroes of war.<br /><br />
President Rodrigo Duterte, an ally of the Marcoses, allowed the burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, which was the late strongman's last wish, according to his family.<br /><br />
Marcos' remains were transferred by helicopter from Ilocos Norte province, where it had been kept since it was brought back to the country in 1993. He died while on exile in Hawaii in 1989, three years after he was ousted by a military-backed popular revolt.<br /><br />
“We should not be surprised because that’s how Marcos lived, in defiance of the law, illegally and that’s how he will be buried, again in defiance of the law and with his body being snuck in the Libingan ng mga Bayani surrounded by military and police guards,” said human rights lawyer Barry Gutierrez.<br /><br />
Although there is a 15-day period following the issuance of the SC decision for a motion for reconsideration to be filed, this does not prevent the Marcos family from pursuing the burial at heroes' cemetery.<br /><br />
"Even if there is a 15 day period, there was no order restraining the act," SC spokesman Theodore Te added.<br /><br />

Nangyari raw ito noong kalihim pa ng Department of Justice si De Lima, at ginamit umano ang nakolektang pera sa kampanya nito sa pagtakbong senador.<br /><br />
Dati nang itinanggi ni De Lima ang mga paratang at iginiit na ginigipit lang siya ng pamahalaan.<br /><br />
“Sila dapat ang mag-resign sa ginagawa nila eh. Wala silang mga qualms about doing all these to me na ginagamit nila ‘yung buong machinery, resources ng Executive Department and as I said, sa 'kin sila nakatuon,” ayon sa senadora.<br /><br />
“Anong klaseng standards 'yan? Anong klaseng mindset 'yan na since ‘yun ang gusto ng Pangulo, ginagawa din nila ang lahat ng pamimilit, pag-coerce at pag-blackmail ng mga witnesses?” dagdag niya.<br /><br />
Iminungkahi naman ni Buhay party-list Rep. Jose "Lito" Atienza Jr. kay De Lima na tanungin ang netizens para mapulsuhan nito kung nais ng publiko na magbitiw siya sa puwesto kasunod ng pag-amin sa romantikong relasyon kay Dayan.<br /><br />
"Kung may sensitivity siya sa public opinion. Magtanong siya. Alamin niya ano ang damdamin ng bayan dahil wala pa namang judgement," anang kongresista.<br /><br />
"She should ask. Madali lang iyan. Mag-post siya sa Internet. Tanungin mo ang mga tao: 'Magre-resign ba ako o hindi?'" dagdag niya.<br /><br />
Gayunman, naniniwala si Atienza na "98 percent" ng netizens ang nanaisin na magbitiw umano si De Lima.<br /><br />

Trillanes sneers at Duterte’s martial law remark

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Wednesday sneered at President Rodrigo Duterte’s remark that martial law is a “contingency to meet widespread violence.”<br /><br />
In a text message to reporters, Trillanes said: “Akala ko ba three to six months lang kaya niya [nang] tapusin ang drug problem or else magre-resign siya?”<br /><br />
“Tapos ngayon kailangan na mag-martial law? Anyare? Nag-supermoon?” the senator added.<br /><br />
Duterte promised during his presidential campaign that he will stop the problem of illegal drugs and crime in the country in three to six months.<br /><br />
In September, Duterte asked for an extension of additional six months to his self-imposed deadline to solve the country's crime and drugs problem.<br /><br />
In a separate text message, Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III reiterated that Duterte’s statement on martial law was “merely an idea or an option, not a decision.”<br /><br />
While he said that martial law was a contingency, Duterte clarified that he was never a “fan” of the idea.<br /><br />
"I am not a fan of martial law. Abugado ako e. Natakot 'yung mga tao sa martial law. But if ever, martial law is a contingency to meet widespread violence," Duterte said.<br /><br />
Senator Manny Pacquiao, a close ally of Duterte, said the chief executive is not in favor of martial law.<br /><br />
“Gina-guarantee niya na 'di magkakaroon ng martial law, ayaw niya 'yan. Ang sa kanya eh, protektahan ang mamamayang Pilipino, ayusin, linisin ang ating bansa,” Pacquiao said.

Absolute pardon for Robin

President Duterte yesterday granted absolute pardon to Robin Padilla, who was convicted of illegal possession of firearms in 1994.<br /><br />

Duterte said that while Padilla had been pardoned for the offense before, it was not absolute.<br /><br />

“I granted Robin Padilla pardon be- cause his original pardon did not fully restore his political and civil rights. He can not travel and get a permit to possess a gun again,” the President told Palace reporters last night.<br /><br />

“My pardon involves full restoration of his civil and political rights,” he added.<br /><br />

“That crime did not hurt anyone. I mean if it is a gun, just like the knife, if it sharp it is potentially sharp, put that on the table and it won’t harm anyone if you don’t touch it.” Duterte explained when asked why he granted the pardon.<br /><br />

The pardon was discussed during Padilla’s meeting with Duterte yester- day in Malacanang.

During the hearing of the House Sub-Committee on Judicial Reforms on Tuesday late afternoon, he rallied behind the proposed reimposition of death penalty to deter the commission of crimes.<br /><br />

“In the face of this upsurge of heinous crimes, this government cannot leave our citizens helpless and defenseless. It is high time that the government, through the Legislative branch, exercised its police power, by restoring the supreme penalty of death as deterrence to crimes and thereby send a chilling message to the hardened criminals that this government means business and that barbarity has no place in our society,” Aguirre told the House panel, chaired by Leyte Rep. Vicente “Ching” Veloso.<br /><br />

“The Department of Justice interposes no objection to the passage of the proposed legislative measures restoring the death penalty for being legal, constitutional and a valid exercise of the police power of the State,” he said.<br /><br />

Aguirre said if Congress passes a measure reimposing death penalty, the criminals would think twice before they commit heinous crimes.<br /><br />

“My arguments here is based on personal experience. I would never commit a heinous crime because I would be penalised with death penalty,” he said.<br /><br />

He even noted that drug incidence eliminated for over two years when late dictator Ferdinand E. Marcos imposed death penalty.<br /><br />

He said the abolition of death penalty and the reduction of the penalty to reclusion perpetua or life imprisonment under Republic Act No.9346 had lead to the alarming upsurge of heinous crimes such as drug trafficking, murder and rape, among others, in the past years.

Senator Leila de Lima should face the death penalty if her alleged connections to the illegal drug trade in New Bilibid Prison are proven, an anti-crime watchdog said Wednesday.<br /><br />
Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) founding chairman Dante Jimenez said De Lima's alleged role in the proliferation of illicit drugs at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) could be considered a heinous crime punishable by death.<br /><br />
"Ganoon ang lalabas kasi illegal trafficking ito e kasi imagine, drug trade sa New Bilibid Prison tapos opisyal ka pa," he said.<br /><br />
The VACC is pushing for the reinstatement of death penalty by firing squad, the inclusion of plunder among heinous crimes and heftier penalties for convicted public officials.<br /><br />
The group has also lodged criminal charges and a disbarment case against De Lima for allegedly accepting drug pay-offs from high-profile inmates.<br /><br />
De Lima has denied any wrongdoing and claimed that the VACC's moves are part of a smear campaign headed by President Duterte whom she had criticized for waging a brutal war on drugs.<br /><br />

Pacquiao once again defended his friend Dela Rosa, who, together with his family, watched the senator’s boxing match in Las Vegas for free, including accommodation and allowance.

“Ang mga naghihirap nating kababayan na wala pang mga bahay, nangangailangan pa sila ng tulong. Eh nasaan na 'yung pera? 'Yun ang dapat nating tutukan. Hindi 'yung gagawa ka ng butas dahil kalaban mo,” said Pacquiao, a party mate of President Rodrigo Duterte.<br /><br />

(Our impoverished countrymen don't have houses yet, they need help. But where's the money? That's what [investigators] should focus on, and not look for faults in others just because they are your [political] enemies.)

He reiterated that there was nothing wrong with him treating Dela Rosa and his family.<br /><br />

“Sa aming mga Bisaya, wala kaming iniisip na masama or ano. Ang hangarin namin ay magserbisyo, linisin ang ating bansa, at magkaroon ng matiwasay na pamumuhay ang mga mamamayan,” Pacquiao said.<br /><br />

(We Visayans are not planning on anything evil. Our desire is to serve, clean up the country, ensure that our people live in peace.)<br /><br />

Pacquiao hails from General Santos City, while Dela Rosa is from Davao, both in Mindanao.<br /><br />

Despite the ongoing probe, Dela Rosa said he has "no regrets" that he accepted the all-expenses paid trip from the world boxing champion.<br /><br />

"I have no regrets because I was given quality time with my family, and it was for free. So it's okay if I go to jail as long as my family is happy. I did not steal that money nor did I ask for it. I never asked for it. Senator Pacquiao, my kumpare and my friend, offered it with no strings attached. As far as I'm concerned, my conscience is clear," said Dela Rosa.<br /><br />

The PNP chief's wife, two daughters, and only son joined him in Las Vegas.<br /><br />

Dela Rosa may have violated two laws prohibiting public officials from accepting gifts: Presidential Decree 46 and Republic Act 6713, or the code of conduct for public officials.<br /><br />

The laws, explained lawyer Arno Sanidad, a professorial lecturer at the University of the Philippines College of Law, aim to thwart any possibility of graft or corruption by making it illegal for public officials to receive or solicit gifts of value.<br /><br />

Pacquiao is a member of the Senate committees on justice and human rights and public order, the two panels that investigated the spate of extrajudicial killings linked to the Duterte administration's war on drugs.<br /><br />

The two committees are also set to probe the role of the police in the killings of Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr of Leyte and Mayor Samsudin Dimaukom of Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Maguindanao.

Senator Leila De Lima's admission that she had a romantic affair with her former driver and bodyguard Ronnie Dayan has bolstered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to pin her down on the proliferation of illegal drugs inside the New Bilibid Prison.<br /><br />
"Malaki kasi sa pag-amin niya, the probability na talagang ginamit niya si Dayan sa pagkolekta ng pera sa NBP ay naging lalong kapani-paniwala," Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II said in a text message to GMA News Online when asked if how De Lima's revelation could help the case build-up against her.<br /><br />
Pressed further if the admission might work against De Lima, Aguirre said: "Of course!"<br /><br />
Up until the television interview which aired on GMA News TV's "Bawal ang Pasaway with Mareng Winnie" on Monday night, De Lima had neither confirmed nor denied her special relationship with Dayan, which the senator said lasted for a "few years."<br /><br />
She described her involvement with her former driver, a married man, as "frailties of a woman."<br /><br />
Dayan has been tagged by several witnesses in an inquiry by the House of Representatives as the go-between for the former justice secretary and inmates involved in the drug trade in the national penitentiary.<br /><br />
The senator's former security aide allegedly picked up drug money from gang leaders inside the NBP on her behalf and used it to fund her senatorial campaign.<br /><br />
She has denied the allegations, which were mentioned in the four drug trafficking complaints against her before the DOJ. <br /><br />
De Lima and Dayan's special relationship was also revealed during the inquiry by her former security aide, Joenel Sanchez, who said the two shared a room during out-of-town trips and exchanged sweet nothings through text messages.<br /><br />
The Presidential Security Group member, who served as De Lima's close-in security from July 2010 to May 2015, also disclosed the existence of two private videos, one of them featuring the former justice secretary and Dayan.<br /><br />
De Lima's critics then seized the opportunity to ask the Supreme Court to strip her license as lawyer.<br /><br />
A disbarment complaint filed last month against the senator accused her of gross immorality when she entered into a romantic affair with Dayan.<br /><br />
De Lima shrugged off the complaint, saying it was "all part of a circus" being run by the Duterte administration.<br /><br />
She called the complainants--the Volunteers Against Crime and Corruption (VACC) founding chairman Dante Jimenez, former National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) deputy directors Reynaldo Esmeralda and Ruel Lasala, and jueteng whistleblower Sandra Cam--as "clowns."

MANILA – Senator Leila de Lima has confirmed the long-running rumor that she was once in a romantic relationship with her former driver, Ronnie Dayan.<br /><br />
Asked why she fell in love with a driver like Dayan given her status, De Lima said in an interview with Winnie Monsod, which aired Monday night on GMA, that it was part of her “frailties as a woman.”<br /><br />
"We became so close. That's it. I trusted him. Siyempre, naano po ang loob ko," she said.<br /><br />
De Lima said, her relationship with Dayan lasted for a “few years” and that the latter had long been separated from his wife. She said she broke up with him before she ran for senator.<br /><br />
No less than President Rodrigo Duterte has accused De Lima of having an illicit affair with Dayan.

Up until her admission, De Lima had never denied that she had a relationship with Dayan, who was accused by Duterte of receiving drug money for the former Justice secretary's 2016 senatorial campaign.<br /><br />
In the interview, De Lima said Dayan getting drug money using her name without her permission is "within the realm of possibilities," but she said she would have noticed it if it was indeed true.<br /><br />
"Siguro po ako sa sarili ko 100 percent na wala akong tinatanggap at wala akong papayagan na maging bag man ko [kahit] sino man siya," she said.<br /><br />
Since the controversy erupted, Dayan has not been seen in his residence in Urbiztondo, Pangasinan.<br /><br />
A House of Representatives hearing into the alleged proliferation of the illegal drug trade at the New Bilibid Prison during De Lima’s time as Justice secretary also saw several high-profile inmates claiming that the neophyte senator protected the drug trade in exchange for money.<br /><br />
De Lima has repeatedly denied the allegation that she was involved in the drug trade, saying the administration was only out to persecute her for her vocal opposition to President Duterte's controversial war on drugs.<br /><br />
In an earlier interview on ANC, De Lima said that she was “very close” to Dayan. <br /><br />
"I was very close to him, but I wouldn’t want to be publicly speaking about it. It’s too personal for me," she said on ANC's Headstart with Karen Davila.<br /><br />
De Lima and Dayan allegedly had a sex video together, and Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II once threatened to play it at House hearing. Facing condemnation from both sides of the political fence, the playing of the alleged sex video did not push through.  <br /><br />
In the ANC interview, De Lima she does not believe that her former driver and bodyguard received kickbacks from drug lords.

She said, she would also give small amounts to Dayan "to assist" him.<br /><br />
"As I am telling you, I don’t believe that he is collecting money. Definitely, whether or not he is collecting money, I don’t know about that. I did not know about that," she added.<br /><br />
In the House hearing, De Lima's former bodyguard, Joenel Sanchez, claimed De Lima and Dayan’s relationship ended in March 2015 after the latter got jealous with a new bodyguard, whom he identified as Warren Cristobal.

Duterte lashes out at Bangko Sentral, AMLC over bank account controversy

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — President Rodrigo Duterte on Monday lashed out at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and the Anti-Money Laundering Council (AMLC), accusing them of covering up for politicians "who are really into money laundering."<br /><br />

Duterte, speaking at the 80th founding anniversary of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), warned the two agencies of a possible confrontation between them.<br /><br />

The president recalled that during the campaign period, Senator Antonio Trillanes accused him of having around ₱211 million in an undisclosed joint account with his daughter Sara Duterte in the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI).<br /><br />

Trillanes also claimed that Duterte's bank accounts had ₱2.4 billion in transactions.

Duterte states:

"If I had that money, why did you not initiate an investigation? For I really have none. You could not tell the public because you're protecting somebody...those who are really into money laundering," Duterte said.<br /><br />

During the campaign, Duterte revealed his bank records, which showed two BPI accounts with ₱17,000 and around ₱24,000.<br /><br />

The then-presidential candidate threatened to file a case against BSP and AMLC for criminal negligence because they did not investigate Trillanes' claims.<br /><br />

"You failed miserably. Sinabi na nga na may 200 million, bakit di niyo ko inimbestigahan (Apparently I had 200 million, why didn't you investigate me) so the people would have known?  You're also part of the garbage that I resent to this day," the president said.

"You better go to the secretary of Justice or I will go to you. I will call for you and you have to answer many questions for me," Duterte said.<br /><br />

He added that if the BSP and AMLC do not explain themselves to the public, he will do the explaining for them.<br /><br />

"Either we cooperate in this government as a republic to protect and serve our people. Do not make it hard for us — otherwise, I will make it hard for you," Duterte warned.<br /><br />

The president urged NBI officials to work harder to curb money laundering.<br /><br />

Without naming anyone, Duterte said they have recently discovered a person who laundered ₱5.1 billion pesos through a fake corporation.

Si Mayor Espinosa ay napatay ng grupo ni Laraga sa loob ng Baybay City Jail noong November 5 nang isisilbi ang search warrant.<br /><br />
Ang naturang insidente ang pakay ng joint investigation ng Senate committees on Public Order and Dangerous Drugs at Justice and Human Rights dahil sa hinala na sadyang pinatay ang alkalde.<br /><br />
Ayon kay Laraga, nabanggit umano ni Espinosa noong nabubuhay pa ang mga personalidad na nagbibigay ng proteksyon sa operasyon ng kaniyang anak na si Kerwin, na nadakip kamakailan sa Abu Dhabi.<br /><br />
“Nabanggit na rin ito ni late Mayor Espinosa regarding doon sa mga pulitiko na involved and at the same time, yung mga nasa PNP [Philippine National Police], anang opisyal.<br /><br />
“Yung sa Baybay City is involved. Yung vice mayor ng Baybay City, allegedly yung governor ng Leyte, the mayor of Ormoc City, and the congressman of the third district of Leyte,” dagdag niya.<br /><br />

WASHINGTON - Donald Trump will keep his vow to deport millions of undocumented migrants from the United States, he said in an interview to be broadcast Sunday, saying as many as three million could be removed after he takes office.<br /><br />
"What we are going to do is get the people that are criminal and have criminal records, gang members, drug dealers, where a lot of these people, probably two million, it could be even three million -- we are getting them out of our country or we are going to incarcerate," Trump said in an excerpt released ahead of broadcast by CBS's 60 Minutes program.<br /><br />
The billionaire real estate baron made security at the US-Mexico border a central plank of his insurgent presidential campaign, which resulted in last Tuesday's shock election victory against his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.<br /><br />
Trump added that the barrier to be erected on the US border with Mexico may not consist entirely of brick and mortar, but that fencing could be used in some areas.<br /><br />
"There could be some fencing," Trump says in his first primetime interview since being elected president last week.<br /><br />
"But (for) certain areas, a wall is more appropriate. I'm very good at this, it's called construction," he tells CBS.
