Vice President Leni Robredo and other top executives of the government received "good" and "moderate" net satisfaction ratings in the latest latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.<br /><br />

A report on "24 Oras" on Thursday said that Robredo's net satisfaction rating was "good" at +49.<br /><br />

Senate President Aquilino "Koko" Pimentel III, meanwhile, also got a "good" net satisfaction rating of +37.<br /><br />

House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez and Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno both have a "moderate" rating at +22 and +26, respectively.<br /><br />

The SWS survey was conducted from September 24 to 27 using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults nationwide, 300 each in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.<br /><br />

It has a sampling error margins of ±3 percent for national percentages, and ±6 percent each for Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. <br /><br />

<p>Senator Leila De Lima claims that President Rodrigo Duterte can’t get her out of his head.</p>
<p>During a rare appearance Thursday (October 27) at the Kapihan sa Senado news forum, De Lima was asked by reporters how she felt now that her nemeses Duterte seems to be too distracted with his anti-United States (US) rhetoric to attack her.</p>
<p>De Lima answered by disagreeing with that assessment, since she believes that she’s always running on the President’s mind.</p>
<p>“Eh sabi ko nga, busy pa rin ang Pangulo sa kaka-attack sa akin, I’m always on top of his mind,” she told Senate reporters.</p>
<p>The lady politiko said this has been the case even if Duterte was shuffling in and out of the country during his recent foreign trips.</p>
<p>“Even if he was in Beijing, even if he was in the airport about to leave, or when he arrives, kasama ako palagi sa nababanggit niya.”<br/>
A few months ago, Duterte linked Liberal Party (LP) member De Lima to the illegal drug trade within the New Bilibid Prison (NBP). </p>
<p>This sparked a series of harrowing experiences for the senator, which almost included the public showing of her alleged sex video with another NBP drug suspect.</p>
<p>” So attitude ko, I still try to live as normally as possible. Although, my attitude is I live by the day. Hindi ko alam kung ano ang mga susnuod na ibabato sa akin on a daily basis. </p>
<p>“But I cannot allow that to stymie or to control my daily life. I need to continue, number one, living; and number two, fulfilling my job as a senator,” De Lima said. </p>

Ramos to Duterte: Always say less than necessary

A report from Mike Enriquez on 24 Oras quoted Ramos as saying a leader appeared less in control whenever he tried to impress with words.<br /><br />

"Always say less than necessary. When you are trying to impress people with words, the more you say, the more common you appear, and the less in control," Ramos said in his opinion column for a national broadsheet.<br /><br />

Instead, Ramos said Duterte should win public opinion through actions. He also said Duterte should stop isolating himself.<br /><br />

"Win through your actions, never through arguments," Ramos said. "Do not build fortresses to protect yourself—isolation is dangerous."<br /><br />

Ramos also reminded Duterte to preserve his reputation and stop rushing himself.<br /><br />

"So much depends on reputation—guard it with your life. Reputation is the cornerstone of power... Never seem to be in a hurry - hurrying betrays a lack of control over yourself, and over time," he said.<br /><br />

Ramos said the column he also gave the same unsolicited advice to former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.<br /><br />

In the end, the former president said it was still up to Duterte to "take it or leave it."<br /><br />

This is the third commentary piece that Ramos wrote to assess the Duterte administration.<br /><br />

In his first column on October 9, Ramos said the Philippines was “losing badly” during the first 100 days of the Duterte administration, blaming the government for failing on leadership and teamwork.<br /><br />

A week later, Ramos compared the Philippines under "skipper" Duterte to a leaky and slow-moving ship due to internal strife and disunity.

Senator Leila de Lima has objected to being labeled as a slut and a bad person as she criticized President Rodrigo Duterte and his allies for the “relentless and vicious” attacks against her.<br /><br />

In a speech before students at Miriam College Friday, De Lima denied anew that she is the “queen” of the illegal drug trade inside the New Bilibid Prison despite being portrayed as such during the House of Representatives’ inquiry into the matter. <br /><br />

“I am not the bad and evil woman, or slut that they are trying to portray in the past few weeks. I have not partied or slept with any drug convict. I have not received anything from a drug convict or a drug lord, or anyone else,” she said.<br /><br />

“I have not benefited from the drug trade. I am not the Queen of the Drug Trade of the Bilibid. I am not the mother of these drug lords,” the senator added.<br /><br />

While De Lima admitted to having weaknesses and “certain flaws” as a woman, she said she never betrayed the country.<br /><br />

“I want that made clear because that’s what I fear that some of you may have started to believe the relentless, vicious attacks being launched and led by the most powerful man in this country,” she said.

De Lima lamented the “slut shaming” she has been subjected to over the past weeks due to her criticism of the Duterte administration’s anti-human rights policies, particularly with regard to extrajudicial killings.<br /><br />

“I’m being subjected to these unprecedented attacks on my person, on my character, and on my credibility. Their whole agenda is to crush and break my spirit so that no one would listen to me anymore,” she said.<br /><br />

It was during the House justice committee’s hearings on the NBP drug trade that details about De Lima’s supposed romantic relationship with her former driver, Ronnie Dayan, were revealed.<br /><br />

Several inmates from the national penitentiary also testified that De Lima received multimillion-peso payoffs when she was justice secretary in exchange for turning a blind eye on the drug trade inside the NBP.

<p>MANILA, Philippines -- An agriculture industry group urged Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon to immediately file economic sabotage charges against a firm and all those who helped it, including government personnel, in an alleged attempt to smuggle 12 40-foot containers of rice into the country.</p>
<p>“This is another litmus test  on the resolve of Commissioner Faeldon to combat smuggling, there is already a law in place -- RA 10845, that decreed the smuggling of agricultural products as an act that constitute economic sabotage, a non-bailable offense,” said Rosendo So, chairman of the <em>Samahang Industriya sa Agrikultura</em>, in a statement Wednesday.</p>
<p>The smuggling attempt was allegedly carried out by RPR International Trading, its brokers and agents with help from “cohorts in government,” SINAG said.</p>
<p>The group said it was not enough to suspend the accreditation of the shipment’s consignee.</p>
<p>“We are hoping that this time, these smugglers will be apprehended, charged and punished accordingly. Many in the agriculture sector voted for President Digong because of his campaign promise to end smuggling,” So said.</p>
<p>Under Republic Act 10845, the minimum value of smuggled agricultural products to qualify as economic sabotage are P10 million for rice, P1 million for other products such as sugar, corn, pork, poultry, garlic, onion, carrots, fish and cruciferous vegetables.</p>
<p>The law punishes economic sabotage with life imprisonment and a fine of twice the fair value of the smuggled agricultural products plus the aggregate amount of the taxes, duties and other charges avoided.</p>
<p>The BOC has already appraised the value of the rice RPR allegedly attempted to smuggle at P20 million.</p>
<p>SINAG also reiterated its demand for the BOC to file economic sabotage charges against Sanfred Trading and Great Light Trading, the consignees of 88 40-foot vans that contained red onions when the import permit issued was for garlic and ginger.</p>
<p>“<em>Wala pang nakakasuhan ng </em>economic sabotage<em> kaya’t malakas pa rin ang loob ng mga </em>smugglers<em> na ito at tuloy ang kanilang ligaya </em>(No one has been charged with economic sabotage so smugglers are emboldened to continue),”<em> </em>So said.</p>
<p>SINAG said its research suggests that close to P200 billion worth of agricultural goods were smuggled into the country over the last five years, with rice accounting for P94 billion, the largest commodity. Smuggled pork came to P40 billion, then sugar, P25 billion.</p>
<p>Other commonly smuggled commodities were chicken, garlic, onion and carrots.</p>
<p>The total value of smuggled agricultural products, said SINAG, translates to around P60-80 billion in lost revenues for the government based on the 30-40 percent tariff levied on these commodities.</p>

The justice committee report on the illegal drug trade at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) was adopted in plenary Wednesday evening. Following that, the House of Representatives stood pat on its stand not to recommend the filing of drug trafficking charges against Sen. Leila de Lima.<br />
It is first time in Congress’ history to have an overwhelming approval of the majority of 294 members even if the our hearings consistently indicated De Lima had accepted drug money.<br />
This angered opposition Rep. Edcel Lagman of Albay, who branded the move of the members of the super majority coalition as nothing but another “railroad and lightning speed” where it “inordinately fast-track(ed) the approval of bills and resolutions by the plenary.”<br />

The president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines called on his "brother priests" on Maundy Thursday to stop "homily abuse," or delivering "unorganized, unprepared" sermon before their congregation.<br /><br />

In a Facebook post, Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas such homilies are among the "many abuses among the clergy."<br /><br />

"Yes, abuse of the kindness of the people who are forced to listen to long, winding, repetitious, boring, unorganized, unprepared, mumbled homilies," he wrote. "In jest but certainly with some truth, the people say our homilies are one of the obligatory scourges that they must go through every Sunday."

Among the things priests should not bring into the congregation is politics, as part of the priestly vocation is simplicity, the Archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan noted.<br /><br />

"Simplicity means resisting to use the pulpit as a means to get back at those who oppose us – patama sa sermon. Simplicity also demands that we keep divisive election politics away from the lectern. Simplicity in homilies means not desiring to make people laugh or cry – that is for telenovelas and noontime shows," he said.

Improving the roster<br /><br />

Villegas pointed out that based on what people say about their homilies, "they are not complaining about depth of message or scholarly exegesis."<br /><br />

He said the congregation has to endure homilies "that cannot be understood because we take so long with the introduction, we do not know how to go direct to the point, and we do not know how to end."<br /><br />

Since they were "abused by the homilies of our elder priests," the current generation should take a step at improving the roster by not ordaining "a seminarian [that] cannot speak in public with clarity and effectiveness," Villegas pointed out.<br /><br />

"He will be a dangerous homily abuser. Homily abuse can harm souls," he wrote.

Call of the times<br /><br />

Three things are embodied in the call of the times, the CBCP president said: "priestly sincerity," simplicity – both "of message and even more, greater simplicity of life" – and study.<br /><br />

"Our homilies will improve if we diminish our love for talking and increase our love for listening," he said. "We will be better homilists if we dare to smell again like the sheep."<br /><br />

Villegas eventually called on priests to "be careful" with their lives, as well as with "every homily."
