Liberal Party (LP) senators will not leave the majority bloc, Senator Bam Aquino said Tuesday, following the resignation of its highest elected official, Vice President Leni Robredo, from President Rodrigo Duterte’s Cabinet.
“The Senate is very independent these days… And as long as we’re able to keep that independence, we will stay with the majority here,” Aquino told reporters in an interview.
“Kung tutuusin namin, ‘yung majority and minority division in the Senate, it’s not as strict as it is in the House [of Representatives],” he added.
Apart from Aquino, three other senators belong to the LP: Senate President Pro Tempore Franklin Drilon, and Senators Francis Pangilinan and Leila de Lima.
Aquino, however, admitted that there were “movements” among other party members after Robredo resigned from her post as chair of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC).
Aquino said the LP is fully supportive of her decision, as well as the duties she will fulfill outside the Cabinet.
Robredo resigned from her post after he was told that Duterte wanted her to “desist from attending all Cabinet meetings” starting Monday.
In her statement to the media, Robredo said there were “major differences” between her and Duterte “in principles and values.”
She also said she has been warned of a plot to steal the vice presidency from her.
