MANILA — Government troops suffered three casualties in an encounter with Abu Sayyaf rebels in Patikul, Sulu, on Saturday.
According to the military, the combat operation in Sitio Bud Taming in Barangay Kabbontakas was led by Lieutenant Colonel Vlademir Lenos Villanueva of the 35th Infantry Batallion.
The Abu Sayyaf unit Villanueva’s men fought included senior leader Radulan Sahiron and lower-ranking leaders Hatib Hajan Sawajaan, Yasser Igasan and Mujer Yadah.
The gun battle lasted one hour and 45 minutes. Sahiron and his group fled with numerous casualties, a report said.
Seventeen were reported wounded on the government side.
