De Lima: Duterte responsible if something happens to me

Senator Leila de Lima on Tuesday said she will hold President Rodrigo Duterte responsible if any harm happens to her, following the chief executive’s supposed threat against her.<br /><br />
De Lima said Duterte should be considered the “number one suspect” if something happens to her, quoting Duterte’s statements Monday wherein he mentioned the senator as he threatened to have narcopoliticians killed.<br /><br />
“Kung may mangyari sa 'kin, sino ang number one suspect? 'Di ba siya? And I’m making him responsible if something happens to me,” De Lima said.<br /><br />
“If something happens to me, he is the one responsible, directly or indirectly dahil paulit-ulit nila akong dini-demonize,” she added.<br /><br />
De Lima said she considers as a “veiled threat” Duterte’s mention of her in a speech in Malacañang during the mass oath-taking of newly-appointed government officials.<br /><br />
In the said speech, Duterte said: “Magtanong ka ng isang pulis dito kung may sinabi ako na patayin mo ‘yang si De Lima o patayin mo ‘yang si ano. I never ordered. Ang sinabi ko lang… Remember that I declared war. I did not declare any just police punitive action. No, no, far from it.”<br /><br />
“To me, this is doubly disturbing to me. I take it as a veiled threat. Why all of a sudden babanggitin ako tungkol sa patayan?…Is that a subconscious slip, a sort of a Freudian slip?” De Lima said.<br /><br />
“Alam ko naman 'yan, na I’m always on top of his mind. 'Pag sinabi niya yung droga, you can be sure na ako yung isusunod niya. But this is the first time na nagbabanggit siya about patay,” the senator added.<br /><br />
De Lima said she continues to receive threats from her “haters” and “trolls” in her personal phone, the number of which had been exposed in a congressional probe.<br /><br />
De Lima and Dutere have been at odds with each other since De Lima was chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR), which initiated an investigation into the supposed summary killings in Davao City. Duterte was the city mayor then.<br /><br />
Writ of amparo<br /><br />
De Lima said she is considering filing a petition for writ of amparo before the Supreme Court (SC) next week against Duterte, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II and Solicitor General Jose Calida, who have made controversial statements against her.<br /><br />
Calida, for one, had dubbed the senator as “Public Enemy No. 1” for her alleged destabilization efforts against the Duterte administration and its war on drugs.<br /><br />
The writ of amparo, De Lima said, will tell the respondents to stop issuing threats against her.<br /><br />
“To tell them to stop issuing statements that can incite people whether their own allies or supporters or other elements to do harm to me,” De Lima said.<br /><br />
“[Calling me a] leading narcopolitician and Public Enemy No. 1 makes me already a fair game for sinister things. Maaring hindi mismo sa grupo nila but sa iba yung mga fanatics, yung mga grupong out to destabilize the government, to embarrass the President,” she added.<br /><br />
In November last year, De Lima filed a petition for writ of habeas data against Duterte. The petition is a remedy "available to any person whose right to privacy in life, liberty, or security is violated."

Senator Leila de Lima on Tuesday denied staying at the house of Loida Nicolas-Lewis, the Filipino-American philanthropist who was tagged in the supposed plot to oust President Rodrigo Duterte. <br /><br />
“I went to the US to receive that award from the foreign policy. Yung accommodation ko was care of the organizers,” De Lima told reporters in an interview. <br /><br />
“Napaka-number one sinungaling talaga ‘yung Secretary of Justice na ‘yan. Dami na niyang kasinungalingan na sinasabi,” she added. <br /><br />
De Lima was referring to Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II, who was earlier quoted as saying that De Lima stayed in Lewis’ home during her visit to the United States last year. <br /><br />
In December 2016, De Lima flew to Washington D.C. to be recognized as one of the leading global thinkers. <br /><br />
Lewis was tagged in the so-called “LeniLeaks,” supposed “leaked emails” from a Yahoo! group that called themselves Global Filipino Diaspora Council.  The group was supposedly composed of supporters of Vice President Leni Robredo. <br /><br />
Lewis, a known supporter of Robredo, denied that there was a conspiracy to unseat the President. <br /><br />
In her statement, she said: "First: No plot to oust Duterte. Resign Duterte Movement is based on President Duterte's own words that he would resign if drugs are still rampant six month(s) after his inauguration."<br /><br />
“Dissent is NOT equivalent to a plot or conspiracy,” Lewis added. <br /><br />
"In a democracy, opinions of varying shades, either praise or criticism, are a staple ingredient of a vibrant democracy," she said. "Since when has criticism become an element of sedition?"<br /><br />
Robredo has also denied any part in the supposed anti-Duterte plot.

Nitong Martes, sinabi ni De Lima na dapat ikonsiderang “number one suspect” si Duterte kapag may nangyaring masama sa kaniya.<br /><br />
“Kung may mangyari sa 'kin, sino ang number one suspect? 'Di ba siya? And I’m making him responsible if something happens to me,” giit ng senadora.<br /><br />
“If something happens to me, he is the one responsible, directly or indirectly dahil paulit-ulit nila akong dini-demonize,” patuloy niya.<br /><br />
Ayon kay De Lima, itinuturing niyang “veiled threat” ang ginawang pagbanggit ni Duterte sa kaniyang pangalan nang talumpati ang punong ehekutibo sa harap ng mga bagong talagang opisyal na ginawa sa Malacañang nitong Lunes.<br /><br />
Sa naturang talumpati, sinabi ni Duterte na: “Magtanong ka ng isang pulis dito kung may sinabi ako na patayin mo ‘yang si De Lima o patayin mo ‘yang si ano... I never ordered. Ang sinabi ko lang… Remember that I declared war. I did not declare any just police punitive action. No, no, far from it.”<br /><br />
Ang naturang pahayag ni Duterte ay kaugnay sa mga alegasyon na may kinalaman siya sa mga nangyayaring patayan kaugnay sa kampanya ng gobyerno laban sa iligal na droga.<br /><br />

Kasabay nito, sinabi ni De Lima na ikinukonsidera niya na maghain ng petition for writ of amparo sa Korte Suprema sa susunod na linggo laban kina Duterte, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II at Solicitor General Jose Calida.<br /><br />
Ayon kay De Lima, bunga umano ito ng mga kontrobersiyal na pahayag na sinabi sa kaniyang ng mga nabanggit na opisyal na nagiging banta rin sa kaniyang kaligtasan.<br /><br />

Loida Nicolas-Lewis, a known supporter of Vice President Leni Robredo and her running-mate Liberal Party standard-bearer Mar Roxas, issued a statement Monday in light of the so-called "Lenileaks."<br /><br />
These were supposedly "leaked emails" from a Yahoo! group that called themselves Global Filipino Diaspora Council. <br /><br />
The emails were reportedly seen in a YahooGroups page, Global Filipino Diaspora Council. <br /><br />
In her statement, Nicolas-Lewis said: "First: No plot to oust Duterte. Resign Duterte Movement is based on President Duterte's own words that he would resign if drugs are still rampant six month(s) after his inauguration."<br /><br />
"Second, Global Filipino Diaspora Council is a Public Site. If there is a conspiracy, would it be discussed in a public page?" she added.
Nicolas-Lewis then said, "Dissent is NOT equivalent to a plot or conspiracy."<br /><br />
"In a democracy, opinions of varying shades, either praise or criticism, are a staple ingredient of a vibrant democracy," she said. "Since when has criticism become an element of sedition?"<br /><br />

As for trust, Robredo got 58 percent, seven points lower than last September's 65 percent.<br /><br /
Survey results showed Duterte's trust and  approval ratings in December were at 83 percent, down three percentage points from 86 percent in September.<br /><br /
Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III's ratings also took a hit as his approval and trust scores slipped to 55 percent and 50 percent, respectively. His approval and trust ratings in September were at 61 percent and 55 percent, respectively.<br /><br /
On the other hand, House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez's approval score remained at 43 percent while his trust rating went down by three points to 38 percent.<br /><br /
Chief Justice Sereno got an approval rating of 47 percent (up by a point from September) but her trust rating dipped by three points to settle at 41 percent.<br /><br /
Among key government institutions, the Senate enjoys the highest approval rating with 58 percent, followed by the Supreme Court (55 percent, up by four points from September) and the House of Representatives (51 percent).<br /><br /
The Senate got a 57-percent trust rating, the House of Representatives secured 51 percent, while the SC got 53 percent, up by three points in the previous survey.<br /><br /
The survey was conducted from December 6 to 11 through face-to-face interviews with 1,200 adult respondents. It had a ± 3 percent error margin at the 95-percent confidence level.<br /><br /
Among the events that took place during the survey period are the resignation of Robredo from as chairman of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) after being barred by Duterte from attending Cabinet meetings, Duterte's decision to back the police version in the killing of Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa, and the celebration of the International Human Rights Day amid the alleged extrajudicial killings under the government's campaign against illegal drugs.

Senate President Pro Tempore Franklin Drilon on Monday advised Malacañang not to fall for reports on social media following its decision to look into the “leaked” emails on the supposed plan of Vice President Leni Robredo’s supporters to oust President Rodrigo Duterte from office.<br /><br />
“My advice to the Executive branch is to exercise extreme care in basing your decisions on social media particularly on alleged plots appearing in social media,” Drilon said in an interview with reporters in Pasay City.<br /><br />
“In the first place, if it is really a credible plot, you will not find it in social media. Isn’t that logical? That if you’re plotting something, why should you place it in social media?” he added.<br /><br />
Drilon, a close ally and party mate of Vice President Robredo in the Liberal Party (LP), said there are “trolls” operating in social media.<br /><br />
“It’s quite unfortunate that such issues are given attention by the Executive branch…It’s a waste of time,” he stressed.<br /><br />
Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, for his part, said the so-called “Lenileaks” has “not bothered” him.<br /><br />
“It has not bothered me to the point that I have not even read reports about Lenileaks…Nababasa ko lang yung headline but not the details,” Pimentel, a Duterte ally, said.<br /><br />
Pimentel, however, said he understands Malacañang's attitude to have the reports investigated.<br /><br />
“Maybe we can agree with it that all the reports, rumors about destabilization or threats to the administration, should be investigated and seriously treated pero that’s their attitude,” he said.<br /><br />
“I will not blame them for that. I will not criticize them for that,” Pimentel added.<br /><br />
Communications Secretary Martin Andanar earlier said President Duterte is aware of moves to unseat him.<br /><br />
Andanar said Malacañang has reached out to the sources of the information and it is already being looked into by National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr.<br /><br />
"Magbibigay ng rekomendasyon si Secretary Esperon kung ano ang nararapat na gawin. Hindi dapat na pangunahan ang rekomendasyon ni Secretary Esperon," he added.<br /><br />
The "Lenileaks" refers to the supposed leaked emails  posted online which allegedly showed exchanges between Filipino-American philanthropist Loida Nicolas-Lewis and her sister, former Commission on Filipinos Overseas chair Imelda "Mely" Nicolas.<br /><br />
Robredo, who resigned as Housing Secretary after being barred by Duterte from attending Cabinet meetings last month, had denied any connection to plans of ousting the President.<br /><br />
"Ako naniniwala ako na hindi makakabuti sa bansa natin na gumawa na naman tayo ng mga 'oust the president' movement," she said during her visit in Lambunao, Iloilo, on Saturday.

Vice President Leni Robredo on Monday denied her supposed involvement in the so-called "Lenileaks," a reported plot for the ouster of President Rodrigo Duterte.<br /><br />
In an interview in Marinduque, Robredo said she is not part of the Yahoo! group of the Global Filipino Diaspora Council, now under fire for emails posted on social media that allegedly showed exchanges between some US-based supporters of the Liberal Party .<br /><br />
"Hindi ko alam kung ano ang participation ko. Nami-mention daw ang pangalan ko, pero hindi ako kabahagi nu'ng grupong iyon," she said. "Mayroon din daw e-mails na nagsi-circulate. Wala, hindi rin ako kabahagi doon."<br /><br />
In television interview, Robredo's spokesperson, Georgina Hernandez, said that the leaked e-mails came from "an independent group."<br /><br />
"This isn't linked to the OVP (Office of the Vice President)," she said.<br /><br />
She also noted that "the so-called leaked information came from a public Yahoo! group account."<br /><br />
"There is transparency in the information and there should be no malice," Hernandez said.<br /><br />
No meeting in America<br /><br />
Robredo, meanwhile, said the issue is not completely clear to her at this time because she has been away on field visits to Bicol, which began after her family trip to the US for the holidays.<br /><br />
By the "bits and pieces" she has heard, she said it was "not surprising" that her name was floated in the said exchanges because she is the vice president.<br /><br />
"Mayroon tayong mga supporters na karamihan nagri-react din sa ginagawang pambibiktima sa atin. Tayo ang nasa receiving end ng napakaraming fake na news, napakaraming hindi tama na mga kuwento. Ito yata ang reaksyon doon," she said.<br /><br />
"Pero sa akin, as much as possible, gusto ko sanang mag-concentrate sa trabaho, kasi ang tingin ko lang, ang daming viciousness ngayon sa internet. Mayroon kaming mandatong kailangang gampanan, na kung magpapadala kami sa kasamaan na nangyayari online, paano namin magagampanan ang aming mandato?" she added.<br /><br />
During the interview, Robredo also denied being in touch recently with Filipino-American philatropist Loida Nicolas-Lewis, a known LP supporter who was part of the leaked e-mails.<br /><br />
"Nakausap ko po siya napakatagal nang panahon. Hindi ko po alam kung before the campaign or during the campaign, before po yata. Before the campaign," she said.<br /><br />
"Pero after the elections, noong ako po ay nanalo na, hindi ko po maalala kung nagkaroon ng pagkakataon na nag-meet kami. Sinasabi pong nag-meet daw kami sa Amerika, hindi po iyon totoo," she added.<br /><br />
"Ni personal meeting, ni tawag sa telepono, hindi po kami nagtawagan o nag-meet sa Amerika. Kaya 'yung kumakalat na balita hindi po iyon totoo," she went on.

FILIPINO-American supporters of Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni” Robredo are allegedly behind efforts to undermine President Rodrigo Duterte, leaked emails posted online by bloggers showed.<br /><br />

The leaked emails, first posted by the “Thinking Pinoy” blog on Friday, showed exchanges between members of the “Global Filipino Diaspora Council” (GFDC) including billionaire philanthropist Loida Nicolas-Lewis and her sister, former Commission on Filipinos Overseas chairwoman Imelda “Mely” Nicolas, both Robredo supporters.<br /><br />

In one of the emails, dated December 4 or the day Robredo announced her resignation from the Duterte Cabinet, Lewis supposedly told GFDC members: “The only way to fight this evil plot to unseat VP Leni is to ask Duterte to resign. After all, he promised to resign in six months if he has not solved the drug epidemic in the Philippines.”<br /><br />

“He asked for an extension of another six months. Extension denied! Join Duterte Resign Movement,” the email said. It provided a link to a change.org petition calling on the President to quit.<br /><br />
Another leaked email, supposedly from lawyer Ted Laguatan, claimed protests against Duterte were gaining ground. The email was dated November 21 or amid protests against the burial of former president Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani.<br /><br />

“This plan is going even better than I expected. We, on our part outside the Philippines are doing our part in holding rallies everywhere,” it said.<br /><br />

It also asked the GFDC to reach out to the student councils of UP, Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle University and other schools, as well as the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines to mobilize priests and nuns.<br /><br />

“Thanks for fighting a genuinely sacred fight,” it added.<br /><br />

An email from “Mely” replied: “Let us continue to keep each other abreast of what’s happening from both sides of the ocean.”<br /><br />

Sought for comment, Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr., who alerted Malacañang of the supposed anti-Duterte activities of Filipino-American groups last September, said: “A picture is worth more than a thousand words.”<br /><br />

“Let the picture speak for itself and draw your own conclusions from it,” he said.<br /><br />

Robredo did not address the supposed leaked emails on Saturday, but in response to a question from the press in Iloilo on her supposed involvement in a plot to unseat Duterte, she said: “Ako naniniwala ako na hindi makakabuti sa bansa natin na gumawa na naman tayo ng mga ‘oust the President’ movement [I believe it is not good for the country for us to organize ‘oust the President’ movements].”<br /><br />

Trolls vs Marcos<br /><br />

Another email, this time from the Office of the Vice President’s social media unit and dated January 4, instructed “trolls” to launch an online counterattack against Duterte, defeated vice presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and a number of social media personalities.<br /><br />

The counterattack was supposedly meant as a response to pro-Marcos and pro-Duterte groups and “influencers” such as the blogs of “Thinking Pinoy” and “Maharlika,” newly appointed censors board member Mocha Uson, Sass Rogando Sassot and a “Mr. Riyoh” who have criticized Robredo for vacationing in the US as Typhoon “Nina” hit her home region of Bicol on Christmas Day.<br /><br />

“The BBM (Bongbong Marcos) camp has released several memes to have a ‘show of force’. Their messaging is to make their memes viral to make it appear like more people voted for BBM as the real VP. Our attack: Flip the memes and show unflattering pictures with controversies of BBM and use their ‘the real VP’ narrative,” the supposed email from the vice president’s social media team read.<br /><br />

“[We should] use the photos of BBM supporters during the Luneta rally and/or Duterte youth during the Marcos burial rally. The messaging should be: they’re numerous online, but they never deliver the real bodies needed when the battle is offline. They are a fake and paid army,” it claimed.<br /><br />

“We would also like to request you and your communities to coordinate with us whenever a new campaign is launched for them and/or against her (Robredo),” it added.<br /><br />

The same email also defended Robredo’s efforts for typhoon victims by saying that her team was mobilized even before the typhoon hit, and that she organized private efforts to donate to typhoon-hit Bicol, Marinduque, Batangas and Mindoro.<br /><br />

“The dissatisfaction with VP Leni does not come from Bikolanos. It comes from troll influencers (Mocha, Sass, Thinking Pinoy) who never organized or mobilized efforts to help out the typhoon victims. VP Leni cannot shoulder everything. The national government (and other agencies such as DSWD) is the one who needs to step up,” it added.<br /><br />

The Office of the Vice President has yet to respond to queries in connection with the supposedly leaked emails.

Vice President Leni Robredo seemed to dismiss the controversy about the alleged leaked emails posted online that seemed to show she is part of a well-orchestrated plan to oust President Rodrigo Duterte.<br /><br />

In a late afternoon speech at the Ateneo Student Leaders’ Assembly Homecoming on Sunday, January 8, Robredo said, “Most of the things thrown at me are purely ridiculous.”<br /><br />

“Papatulan ko ba iyon lahat? (Shall I address all these) when there is a goal I have to reach: a mandate I have to perform?”<br /><br />

There was no attempt on her to explain the leaked emails. “As long as you focus yourself in your goal, alam mo in your heart that you won’t lose sight of what you believe in, okay na iyon,” she said.<br /><br />

Before Robredo’s speech, the Office of the Vice President was tightlipped about the so-called #LeniLeaks that emerged over the weekend.<br /><br />
On its Facebook page, blogger “The Thinking Pinoy” shared the leaked emails of the members of a Yahoo! group that called themselves as Global Filipino Diaspora Council (GFDC).<br /><br />

“The only way to fight this evil plot to unseat VP Leni is to ask Duterte to resign. After all, he promised to resign in six months if he has not solved the drug epidemic in the Philippines,” the email read. “He asked for an extension of another six months. Extension denied! Join Duterte Resign Movement.”<br /><br />

Another leaked email said: “This plan is going even better than I expected. We, on our part outside the Philippines are doing our part in holding rallies everywhere.”<br /><br />

Allegations of the ouster plot on Duterte caused a social media firestorm with the trending hashtag #LeniLeaks.<br /><br />

Netizens scored Robredo’s camp for keeping mum about the issue, but the OVP maintained its silence on the leaked emails even amid calls to shed light on #LeniLeaks.<br /><br />

Robredo also did not categorically address the supposed leaked emails when interviewed by local media in Iloilo on Saturday.<br /><br />

But Robredo, who resigned from the Cabinet as chair of the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council, disputed allegations anew that she is involved in any ouster plot against Duterte.<br /><br />

“This oust Duterte [movement], I’m sure that I’m not part of it if there is such plan,” the vice president said.<br /><br />

“I believe that it would not be good for the country when we carry out another oust the president movement.”<br /><br />

The former housing chief reiterated that she did not join any protest rallies calling for Duterte’s removal from office.<br /><br />

Robredo reiterated the president was misinformed.<br /><br />

“Before I don’t know what the reason, but when the president was interviewed last Christmas, he said that I was a part of rallies to oust him. That is not true, I did not join any rally,” she said.<br /><br />

On November 25 and 30 last year, Robredo recalled that she had been invited to join anti-Marcos burial rallies, but she deliberately did not take part on the protest actions “in deference to the president” because she was a member of the Cabinet.<br /><br />

She sought to clarify anew that her criticisms of the president such as that against extrajudicial killings in the country are not tantamount to calls for his removal from office.<br /><br />

“For me, the intention of my criticism is for our president to listen to us on issues we feel strongly about, like extrajudicial killings. But my criticisms are not tantamount for his ouster.”<br /><br />

Assistant presidential communications secretary Ana Marie Banaag said the Palace will respect the statement of the vice president.<br /><br />

Banaag said it was up to Robredo to convince the people that she has no involvement in the alleged plot to oust Duterte.
