Vice President Leni Robredo has said the apparent spat between President Rodrigo Duterte and members of the Catholic church in the Philippines is not helping the country in this "extraordinary time."

Robredo was asked on Saturday to comment on Duterte's recent tirade, where the President again scored Catholic priests and leaders for "hypocrisy," as he bristled at their supposed criticism over the rising death toll in his administration's war against drugs.

Robredo said Duterte's remarks "creates animosity" between the two institutions.

"Parang ngayon, extraordinary time ito sa ating bansa at hindi nakakatulong na nag-aaway-away tayo," the Vice President said at the sidelines of her visit to Barangay Sabang in Calabanga, Camarines Sur.

"Para sa akin, sana hinahanapan natin ng... marami tayong mga iba-ibang paniniwala, pero sana ang binibigyan natin ng pansin iyong mga puwede nating pagtulungan," she said.

"Iyong comment laban sa mga kaparian hindi ito nakakatulong dahil nagke-create ng animosity between the government and the Catholic church. Ang aking pagnanais, irespeto ang pagkakaiba ng paniniwala, pero maghanap ng mga paraan kung papaano makakapagtulungan," she added.

Last week, Duterte expressed his dismay over priests who tag casualties in the drug war as cases of extrajudicial killings.

He called out the supposed hypocrisy of priests who take wives despite swearing to an oath of celibacy, and even said Catholic leaders had no moral ascendancy if they could not give justice to the children molested by priests.

He also asked Catholic leaders what they have contributed to the campaign against illegal drugs despite millions in collection its parishes receive.

Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said Novaliches Bishop Emeritus Teodoro Bacani, who denounced the anti-drug war as a "bringer of death," triggered Duterte's latest tirade.

Saying the President's remarks was not "anti-Catholic," Abella also suggested that Catholic church leaders meet Duterte for a dialogue.
