Senator Antonio Trillanes IV on Thursday vowed to hold President Rodrigo Duterte accountable for extrajudicial killings (EJKs) even after six years from now when Duterte steps down from office.
“Under a friendlier political atmosphere, mailalabas yung katotohanan about that and eventually, [that] may lead to filing of appropriate charges,” Trillanes said during a press briefing.
Asked what he meant about a friendlier environment, Trillanes said he was referring to “after the administration of President Duterte.”
“Lahat yan, hindi lang itong kaso ng kay Mr. Matobato, kung di yung mga nangayayaring EJKs, lahat yan iimbestigahan at kakasuhan yung mga tao na yan,” Trillanes vowed.
“Pagka-pumatay ka ng tao, kailangan may pananagutan talaga eh ... kahit sino man yan,” he said.
The senator was referring to Edgar Matobato, who earlier confessed to being a member of the so-called Davao Death Squad (DDS). Matobato claimed that the DDS killed several people in Davao City on Duterte’s orders during his term as mayor.
Trillanes has been securing the safety of Matobato since he appeared at a Senate inquiry on EJKs.
He said there were supposed to be more witnesses who could corroborate Matobato’s testimony but the probe was “covered up” by Senate justice committee chairman Senator Richard Gordon.
Gordon decided to terminate the investigation, and concluded that the killings were not state-sponsored.
Trillanes argued that the number of EJKs committed since Duterte took his oath of office was evidence enough to prove that he is behind the killings.
“Buo ang aking paniniwala na si President Duterte ang nasa likod ng extrajudicial killings o DDS sa Davao City at ako rin ay naniniwala na siya rin ang nasa likod ng extrajudicial killings sa ating bansa,” he said.
“Kung hindi siya ang nasa likod nito, bakit hindi niya mapigil at instead, ine-encourage pa niya yung killings?” Trillanes added.

Questionable
Trillanes said he supports the administration’s war against illegal drugs but the approach was questionable.
“Wala pang holistic program itong war on drugs. Ang sinasabi lang patayin, patayin. Sa 'kin, mali yan,” Trillanes said.
He called government officials making up alibis for the President as “enablers of evil deeds” and “collaborators.”
Duterte has admitted that summary executions are being committed but denied that those were state-sanctioned.
