Former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III on Sunday attended a prayer-concert organized by Martial Law victims to oppose government plans to bury former President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
Aquino arrived at the event with former Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas and Senator Francis Pangilinan.
The prayer-concert urged at least eight Supreme Court justices to vote against the Duterte administration’s move to bury the late strongman at the heroes' cemetery. The high court is expected to issue a decision on Tuesday.
Aquino noted, at this point, he is "just any other citizen, waiting for their decision." He said he stayed mum on the issue to let the voice of the other victims of Martial Law be heard, and for it to be seen that the issue is not one simply within his family and the Marcoses.
"Dahil sa usaping ito, parang pinipilit ng ilang tao na yung nangyari raw noong Martial Law ay away lang ng pamilya namin ng mga Marcos, so minabuti ko na tahimik muna at marinig natin ang mga boses nung iba pang nabiktima nung Martial Law. Ako naman ay nagkaroon na ng mahabang, dekada na ring pagkakataon para masabi ang punto de vista namin," he said.
[Because on this issue, people seem to push that what happened during Martial Law was only between my family and the Marcoses, I chose to be quiet and let the voices of the other victims of Martial Law be heard. I have had long, decades to speak of our point of view anyway.]
"Para makita na hindi lang away lang naming pamilya ito. Away [ito] ng maraming Pilipino na naghahanap ng katarungan," he added.
[So that it would be seen that this is not merely a fight between our families. This is a fight of many Filipinos who are still searching for justice.]
Aquino is the only son of former Senator Ninoy Aquino and former President Corazon Aquino, two icons who fought for democracy who were instrumental in ousting Marcos.
Ninoy, a staunch critic of the Marcos administration, was incarcerated and eventually assassinated at a tarmac in 1983. Corazon, meanwhile, rose to the presidency after the Marcos ouster.
